‘Two in a million’ black and white twins celebrate forth birthday

Kaydon and Layton Richardson look like the best of friend when in fact they are actually twin brothers with different coloured skin.

Both boys celebrated their fourth birthday yesterday in the exact same week black parents Ben and Angela Ihegboro announced the birth of their white daughter Nmachi to the world.

Doctors around the world have been fascinated by the genetic quirks that have made these children ‘two in a million’ rarities.

Kerry Richardson – Kaydon and Layton’s mother – said that the skin colour had been on her mind when she was giving birth to her daughter Tiyannah recently.

“I thought it was crazy. As much as it happened to me, the twins’  dad is white, so for it to happen to a black couple seems even stranger,”she said.

“When I was carrying Tiyannah I was wondering what colour she was going to be.

“Before the twins I would have expected that any child of mine would have my  colour in them.

“But after Layton I wasn’t sure what she was going to look like.

“When she was born she looked as though she was going to go dark but at about  two weeks old it was clear she was white.

“I was a little surprised as I thought Layton was a one-off.

“Doctors can tell you what sex your baby is going to be but they can’t tell you  what colour!”

Kerry, 32, who is of English-Nigerian heritage, fears that the twins will stand out when they start school in September.

She said, “It’s never been an issue up to now but I know that Layton notices the difference in their colour.

“I’ve tried to explain it to them in the past but last year we were in an  airport in America when Layton shouted, ‘Mum, am I white like my dad and Kaydon’s black like you?’

“That was the first time he had said that but everyone thought it was very  funny.

“I hope it’s not going to be a problem when they start school but kids can be cruel.”

Despite the boys being twins they are often surprised in how different their personality is.

The Job Centre worker from Widnes said, “If you put the twins in a group with other children Kaydon will  take control, whereas when it’s just the two of them Layton calls the shots.

“Kaydon is very good with adults and will tell anybody that he loves them, but  Layton will only say that he loves me.”

In 2006, when the boys were born, the pair were born 20 minutes apart and fair-skinned Layton was born before Kaydon who was much darker.

Dr Stephen Withers, an international clinical geneticist at the time said that the likelihood of a mixed race woman having eggs predominantly one skin colour was rare enough, let alone releasing two of them simultaneously and producing twins.

“It’s probably a million to one chance,” he said.

Their mother added: “You couldn’t find two twins who are more different.

“Kaydon is hyper and excitable whereas Layton can be moody and stubborn. Kaydon  is into arty stuff and jigsaws and Layton is crazy about superheroes.”

And at the Queen Mary Hospital in Sidcup, South East London, doctors confirmed baby Nmachi is not an albino.

Father Ben Ihegboro, 44, a customer services adviser, admitted that when he saw the baby he exclaimed ‘What the flip?’ before joking: ‘Is she mine?’

Speaking to the Sun, mother Angela said: “She is beautiful, a miracle baby.”

Despite jokingly asking whether he was the father, Mr Igegboro said: “Of course she is mine.

“My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn’t been, the baby wouldn’t have looked like that!”

Oldest Briton dies at 111

Eunice Bowman

Bowman lived independently up until two years ago when she moved into a home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, where she died on Friday.

Last August on her birthday, she gave a secret to her longevity, saying, “I have never drank alcohol or smoked. I have had a happy life,” She also said that a ‘tipple of honey’ had helped her along the way. “The tipple of honey is what keeps me going, really. I have had a simple life, but I have had some great memories along the way.”

Bowman was born in Wigan, Lancashire and was the second of 12 children to Thomas Crook, a cotton mill worker and his wife Sarah. Due to the fall of the textile industry, the family moved north-east in 1905 so her father could find work at the collieries. Living through two world wars Bowman worked in a munitions factory. Widowed twice, she has six children, who in turn gave her 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Over 22 prime ministers have been in office through her life time.

Grand-daughter of Bowman’s cousin, said, “Although we knew it would happen one day, it is still incredibly sad. It is just mind-blowing how many significant historical events Eunice lived through, you just wouldn’t have time to talk about them all.”

The Guinness World Records confirmed that Bowman was Britain’s oldest person after the death of Florrie Baldwin aged 114 in May. The oldest living man, Stanley Lucas born in January 1900 died just one month before Bowman. Having received seven birthday cards from the Queen, he said his secret was never smoking, enjoying only the odd glass of sherry, and never travelling far from home.

Play your cards right!

Ever had gifts come late? It’s actually a nice surprise, especially when you weren’t expecting them. Getting a card out of the blue is a little different.

Christmas cards are often designed to go alongside a gift, and getting a gift-related card too late can be confusing and more than a little weird.

If you’re posting your card to a different country, it can take weeks to get there, thanks to annoying postal customs and ultra-clogged postal routes.

Keep in mind how many workers are on holiday around Christmas, and remember, if you’re worried about postal times, forget your own cards or sites like Moonpig.com and send an eCard instead!

Eco ecards means Christmas cheer needn’t be dear!

Christmas is a time when we all don our winter-gear and brave the elements in search of those special cards for all of our family, friends and colleagues – spending bundles of cash on all that paper and card – not to mention the postage costs. This year, around a billion Christmas cards will be sent around the world inflicting a heavy toll on the environment.

Trees are cut down and energy is used to produce cards and envelopes with the vast majority ending up in landfill. Paper production is also very water-intensive and the whole production cycle and delivery leads to greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change.

Why not be kind to the environment this Christmas and New Year by sending a Christmas ecard?

Forget Clintons, Hallmark and M&S – Ecards.co.uk can solve all your Christmas card needs. Ecards are electronic cards sent via email and display the same sentiment, but cost nothing and save paper. They can be personalised however you like and arrive instantly! What’s not to like?
